Despite significant progress in slashing toxic air pollution from power plants under EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, hazardous and persistent pollutants continue to harm people and the economy in the United States. The update to the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards proposed by the EPA today would strengthen these vital safeguards to further cut deadly mercury and other pollution that threatens our health, air, and water and poses significant harm to pregnant people and babies. It is projected that limiting mercury would save the U.S. $170 to $220 million in annualized health benefits and a further $170 million in annualized climate co-benefits. Commonsense Clean Air Act standards like these have a track record of success and have proven we can tackle this toxic air pollution. EPA’s proposal to strengthen the life-saving Mercury and Air Toxics Standards is the right step forward to cut mercury and other hazardous air pollutants from coal plants.
